“Should we trust people?” is that a question or not?

Whenever the helper comes to my place to do the cleaning, I’ll put my purse into draws and close my jewelry box. My bf always criticizes me for it as he thought I should trust people and don’t be paranoid. I tried to explain to him that it’s not because I have less trust in people and it’s not pointing to any certain person but more as a procedure. It’s just like we sign contract with the other side we choose to cooperate with. It’s also like every society built up the law system without the assumption that any specific society member is a criminal.

Instead of assuming everybody is nice person and put the responsibility on other’s shoulder, we need to be responsible for our own belongings when we are in the public. But I failed to convince him that I’m a trustful person and I do it only as a part of the procedure.

Plus as one of my professors always said: “YOU CAN NOT ASSUME THAT.” (This part is only for one of my best friends Mandy. We enjoy this joke all the time together.)

As everybody knows I am too “smart” to be wrong. So something must happen to prove that I'm the Ms. ALWAYS RIGHT as every time. My bf lost 10,000 RMB and a portable HD worth more than 1,000 in his office while he was attending a team meeting. HD is on his desk connected to the computer and money is sealed in an envelope inside his bag. His firm is one of the best US firms in one of the best office buildings here.

He said: “I assume that people works here……….”

I said: “No, you can not assume that (exactly same as what my professor said). What you should do is don’t make any assumption and lock your bag in the draw.” By that, people are good or not is not your problem anymore, you will have your money in your draw and you won’t be bothered to think about who is the one.

I'll feel better that way instead of becoming cynical or be disappointed.
